The brothers, recruited just 20 minutes outside of campus from Bishop, have held key roles on the UGA baseball team since their arrival in 2017. During their time at UGA, Cole and Conner have a total of 18 home runs and 99 RBIs combined. As 23 year old fifth year students, Sean Kenny, assistant UGA baseball coach, says that there is value in having older players on the team to lead by example.
“They lead quietly, they’re not vocal leaders….It’s not their style,” Kenny said, “I think there’s massive value in an older player just kind of being one of the guys and being easily liked.”
Cole and Conner enjoy having each other on the team for support. Cole said that since they know each other’s skills so well, they both are able to critique and assist one another in improving their abilities.
“You always have someone there for good and bad,” Cole Tate said, “me and him have been playing together our whole lives, so he can tell me, by looking at me, what I’m doing wrong.”
Both brothers agree that hard work is required to be a great player on the field. Conner said that it can be a tedious sport and takes persistence to improve.
“I would definitely say hard work because I mean it gets very repetitive,” Conner said, “you have to have the drive to keep doing repetitions to get better.”
The University of Georgia baseball team will face Albany in the season opener on Feb. 18 at Foley Field in Athens, Georgia. Games occur quite frequently with at least one a week for the remainder of the semester. Cole and Connor are both thrilled to have the opportunity to be able to play a fifth season and hopefully lead the bulldawgs to victory in all of their games.
